Unlike some cities where quality dining costs a bundle, many Pittsburgh better restaurants -- especially downtown -- are surprisingly affordable, and attitudes are quite friendly to match. The Strip District, between Liberty Avenue and Smallman Street and 16th and 22nd streets, teems with nightclubs, bars, and eateries. Among them, and open 24/7, is Primanti Brothers, a 60-year-old institution famed for chopped meat sandwiches on thick slabs of Italian bread, messily stuffed with fries, coleslaw, cheese, and sliced tomato. Also on the strip, the Boardwalk Entertainment Complex is a favorite among patrons seeking water-side dining.
